CLASSES FOR SOLO SINGING IN 2008

 Who is it for?
Anyone who enjoys singing and wants to improve their technique, and increase their range and repertoire. There is no minimum level of ability and no audition. It is not necessary to be able to read music. Classes are quite informal and the members are always supportive of each other.

Each session lasts two hours and consists of vocal exercises, some group singing and then individual songs in which each member is coached on the performance and presentation of his or her song. Music is usually that chosen by the student, but advice and suggestions about repertoire will readily be given. There will be a refreshment break of 10-15 minutes in each session. The maximum number of students in each group will be eight.

 Length of the course
Sessions will take place within the framework of the school terms
There will be ten sessions for the class at the venues as detailed below. In addition, each student will be offered an individual lesson of up to an hour (included in the course fees), the time to be selected by arrangement, and this will usually take place at my home teaching studio within the term. This will allow an opportunity to work in a more concentrated way on particular aspects of technique which the student may request or require. This has been a popular feature, and considering that instrumental and vocal tuition is normally charged at upwards of £20 per hour, we think this is good value. At the end of each term there will be a concert evening at which everyone will have the opportunity to perform, if they so wish.

 Dates:
Tuesdays (7-9pm) at St Richards Road (or venue to be advised)
April 22, 29 May 6, 13 20 June 10, 17, 24 July 1, 8 and 9(concert)
Wednesdays (7-9 pm) at St Clement's Church Hall, Sandwich
April 23, 30 May 2, 14, 21 June 11, 18, 25 July 2 and 9 (concert)

 What is needed?
Two copies of any pieces of music you would like to sing, a pencil, and a cassette recorder (or at least a tape) if you find that recording the accompaniment during the sessions is helpful to your practising. Class members should aim to practise their songs (and exercises!) three or four times a week and to select up to about six songs to work on for the term.

 Fees
Full fee: £98; concessions £86
Enrolment is now possible and you should select either the Tuesday or the Wednesday course. Fees should be paid at, or by the first session of the course. This can be done in two installments at the start of each half term.

INDIVIDUAL TUITION

If you prefer more specialised attention or longer and more concentrated lessons this may suit you better. You may prefer not to start off in a singing group, or you may be uncertain of your own singing skill.

Many people want to sing, but believe that they don't have a voice or the necessary skill; often they have been discouraged at an early age or told that they sound terrible and urged not to try!

I don't believe that there is such a thing as being 'tone deaf' and I have found that anyone who really wants to sing and who is prepared to work at it can be taught to do so.

On the other hand, you may have done quite a lot of singing but would like to improve the quality or prepare for performance or an exam.

You may also wish just for some help and coaching in learning new music or preparing your part in a show or musical.

For any of the above situations you could book a consultation lesson or two to gain advice on how to proceed.
